The Executive Governor of Plateau State, His Excellency Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has extended heartfelt congratulations to Professor Elias Nankap Lamle of the University of Jos on his prestigious appointment as Lead Consultant for integrating peacebuilding strategies into Nigeria’s National Action Plan (NAP) on Climate Change.
The appointment, jointly facilitated by the Federal Ministry of Environment and the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) under the auspices of the NAP Global Network, has been hailed as a major milestone not only for Prof. Lamle but also for Plateau State and Nigeria at large.
In a statement issued by the Director of Press and Public Affairs, Dr. Gyang Bere, Governor Mutfwang expressed profound appreciation to the key partners involved in the appointment process. He commended their foresight in selecting a seasoned academic and conflict management expert to lead this critical national assignment at the intersection of climate resilience and peacebuilding.
“This appointment is not only well-deserved but comes at a pivotal moment in our national development,” Governor Mutfwang said. “Prof. Lamle’s extensive academic and professional contributions in conflict resolution and peacebuilding, especially within fragile and climate-vulnerable regions, are assets Nigeria needs now more than ever.”
Prof. Lamle, a renowned scholar in the Anthropology of Conflict Management and Peace Studies, has for decades contributed to academic discourse and practical policy-making across Africa. He is particularly respected for his research into the socio-political dimensions of conflict and his advocacy for integrated development strategies that prioritize both environmental sustainability and social cohesion.
Describing him as a “visionary thinker and committed nation-builder,” Governor Mutfwang said Prof. Lamle has played a pivotal role in shaping conflict-sensitive approaches to governance, development, and diplomacy in Africa.
“His remarkable body of work has directly influenced frameworks for conflict prevention, resolution, and peace consolidation across the continent,” the Governor added. “We are confident that his strategic leadership will bring depth and clarity to Nigeria’s climate and peacebuilding agenda.”
As Lead Consultant, Prof. Lamle is expected to spearhead the integration of peacebuilding principles into Nigeria’s climate policies—particularly those targeting vulnerable communities disproportionately affected by environmental degradation, resource-based conflicts, and social fragmentation. The project will encompass all six geopolitical zones, enhancing the capacity of governmental institutions, civil society organizations, and local stakeholders to implement inclusive, peace-oriented climate action.
Governor Mutfwang emphasized the importance of such a holistic approach, noting that peace and climate security are inherently linked in today’s world. He reaffirmed Plateau State’s readiness to support national efforts aimed at sustainable development and stability.
“This is a proud moment for Plateau State. We stand firmly behind Prof. Lamle and are confident that he will exceed expectations in this important national role,” Mutfwang concluded. “We pray for God’s wisdom, strength, and protection as he undertakes this responsibility that bears both national and global significance.”
The appointment marks another step forward in Nigeria’s commitment to aligning climate resilience strategies with sustainable peacebuilding, in accordance with global best practices and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
